Hitch trailer hire
Trailer hire that starts with the load, not the guess.
Tell providers what you need to move, where you are towing from and when you need the trailer. Check the plate before you hook on.
Trailer types
Choose the trailer by load, size and brake needs.

Questions
Trailer hire questions
Do I need a special licence to tow a hire trailer?
For most light trailer hires, a standard car licence is enough. You still need to stay inside your licence class, the vehicle tow rating, the trailer ATM and the road rules for the state you drive in.
What is towball weight?
Towball weight is the downward load the trailer puts on the towball. Too little can make the trailer sway, too much can overload the rear axle. Start with the trailer plate and your vehicle handbook.
Do I need electric brakes over 750 kg GTM?
A trailer with GTM over 750 kg needs its own braking system in Australia. If the hire trailer has electric brakes, the tow vehicle needs a working electric brake controller. Over 2,000 kg GTM, stronger braking and breakaway requirements apply.
How long can I hire a trailer for?
Same day, overnight, weekend and weekly hires are common. Confirm pickup times, return windows and late return rules with the hire yard before you book.
Will I need to pay a bond?
Many trailer hire yards take a bond or card preauthorisation. Ask what it covers, how long the hold lasts, and what happens if the trailer comes back late or damaged.
What load restraint do I need?
Use rated straps, nets or covers matched to the load. Keep heavy items low and forward of the axle group, secure loose material, and recheck straps after the first short drive.
